Violent Behavior In Society Essay example - 745 Words
Violent Behavior in Society It gained through violent behavior is only temporary and it lasts until the time of revenge comes around. Violence was glorified hundreds of years ago. Back then it was a form of a pure entertainment. We know how among ancient Romans, gladiators (usually slaves or captives trained for the purpose),fought with swords or other weapons at public quot;showsquot;. The more harm the gladiators inflicted the bigger hero he was, and the more respect he gained. All the crimes they committed were condoned, accepted and glorified. Today it seems like instead of gladiators we have boxers. Is boxing just a sport, or another way of violent behavior, that is not only accepted by society but also in many ways glorified? Doâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In some countries people have to stay in lines to buy food. Violence can not be the way to survive in this society! Those who supposely protect citizens slam offenders against the walls, beat them up , abuse them physically (and emotionaly in many cases). There is deffenetly something wrong with that picture. Althought we see it on TV, nobody says anything about it. Most of the time we accept it because it is police; some quot;higher powerquot;. There is no logic here! Police; representatives of the law; are alowed to comite crime...? Society simply gives them a permit to do it by accepting it. WE HAVE TO ask for justice or otherwise we will create another wrong message. Finally, we have quot;everyday quot; violence. We see it on the streets: roberies, shootings,Show MoreRelatedThe True Cause Of Violent Behaviors1613 Words à |à 7 PagesThe True Cause of Violent Behaviors in Today s Society There are volumes of media that are starting to harm the world in which we live. Art Opinion Free Essays
When the word ââ¬Å"artâ⬠comes to mind, I think about a painting. I think about the colors blending together to create an image. However, thinking a little more I think about a sculpture and its smooth, about the story and emotions it expresses. We will write a custom essay sample on Art Opinion or any similar topic only for you Order Now Art in general for me is something beautiful and expressive. Although beautiful as well, I never thought about architecture in the category of art until this weekââ¬â¢s reading. In this weekââ¬â¢s reading about the Parthenon, it is interesting to learn the background of classical Greece and the great efforts that were made to create art in order to reflect the greatness of Greece. All throughout, the Parthenon has been referred to and analyzed as a work of art. At first, I thought it was strange because I would never think of a building itself as art. I was just saw see it as some physical location. However, I realized that my definition of art might have been faulty. I realized art can be any product of creativity that was meant for one to observe visually and analyze. It was meant as a means of expression. The Parthenon, in my opinion, definitely falls into that category. In the reading Art and Experience in Classical Greece, I learn that the Parthenon incorporates different modes of art from architecture to sculpture deliberately for political, cultural, and religious purposes. It is a reflection and ââ¬Å"glorification of Athens as a political power and cultural idealâ⬠(Pollitt 65) through its grandeur. Such grandeur is evident in things such as the ââ¬Å"thickening of its corner columnsâ⬠¦and the curvature of horizontalsâ⬠(Pollitt 66). Each part from the columns to the sculpting on it seems to have a purpose. I think especially for its time as J. J. Pollitt appears to be conveying, this was and still is an impressive work of art. The Meanings and Variations of Father
The Meanings and Variations of Father The Meanings and Variations of Father The Meanings and Variations of Father By Mark Nichol Father derives from the Old English term faeder, which is cognate with the Latin and Greek word pater. (From the Latin term such words as paternal and paternity are derived.) The term refers not only to a male parent but also to an older man who serves as a mentor; it was also long employed as a respectful term of address for an elderly man, though this use is almost obsolete. A stepfather is a man who marries oneââ¬â¢s mother, and a father-in-law is the father of oneââ¬â¢s spouse. Fatherly describes paternal behavior, and fatherlike alludes to a resemblance to the qualities of a father. Fatherhood and the less common fathership describe the quality or state of being a father. A father figure is an older man one looks up to as to a father, whereas ââ¬Å"father imageâ⬠pertains to an idealization of someone in that role. Figuratively, the term father may pertain to one who originated or was significantly responsible for the development of something (such as a founder of a movement or as in the epithet ââ¬Å"Father of our Countryâ⬠for George Washington) or to a leading man of a community, or, impersonally, to a source or prototype. In religious contexts, it is a title for a priest or, capitalized, for God. (A father confessor is a clergyman who hears confessions or, by extension, any man a person trusts with secrets.) The verb father pertains to the act of contributing to biological or figurative birth. Fatherland describes oneââ¬â¢s home country, although the term is tainted by its association with Nazi-era Germany. Father Time is the personification of time as an elderly man. Idioms referring to the word include the proverbs ââ¬Å"The child is father to the man,â⬠which expresses that a personââ¬â¢s personality forms in childhood, ââ¬Å"Like father, like son,â⬠alluding to a resemblance in behavior or qualities between a man and his son, and ââ¬Å"The wish is father to the thought,â⬠with a figurative meaning that beliefs often become perceived as facts because someone desires them to be so. Expressions that use the term include the stock phrase ââ¬Å"Not your fatherââ¬â¢s,â⬠followed by the name of a product or other object, to communicate that something is not to be associated with an outdated counterpart, and ââ¬Å"when (one) was a twinkle in (his or her) fatherââ¬â¢s eye,â⬠referring to a period when a man had a notion of being a father but the child had not yet been conceived or born. Should women be allowed in combat(arguing against the issue) Research Paper
Should women be allowed in combat(arguing against the issue) - Research Paper Example The difference between menââ¬â¢s and womenââ¬â¢s abilities comes from the difference in organization of their bodies. For example, female pelvis is arranged in a way so that women are able to bear children, and such an arrangement results in an off-angle of the legs making women about 10 percent slower runners than men. Also, women have less upper-body strength than men do. Therefore, they would not be able to carry an 80-pund backpack, drag a casualty, properly throw a grenade etc. Women are more easily injured compared to men because they have weaker muscle structure (Tips). In fact, in accordance with the research conducted within the British army, only 1 in 100 female soldiers had enough physical strength to function in military units (Browne). Overall, women are really the weaker sex and should not be allowed in the frontline combat roles. Secondly, women should not be allowed in combat because of the peculiarities of combat environment (Simons). Placing a scarce resource, such as women, in combat units comprised mostly of men may result in the creation of competition between the latter, and this may lead to conflicts within the unit. In addition, it is obvious that when young women and men work together for extended periods of time, couples form. At a certain point, their interaction can make lives of other soldiers uncomfortable. In this case, it is also important not to forget about pregnancy, which makes women be unable to discharge their duties. Finally, allowing women in combat is anti-survival of any society (Tips). The matter is that women play more important role in repopulation of the society. This does not mean that womanââ¬â¢s role is to give birth to children only. It means that womanââ¬â¢s role in giving birth is more important. Compared to men that can father several children during a year, women can give birth only to one (or two or three in case twins or triplets are born). Womanââ¬â¢s health, commitment and time are more essential to the
